how to spin!

How to spin a top:

There are several ways to spin these tops.

Method 1:  Hold the stem of the top between your forefinger and thumb.  The top should be upright with the bottom point sitting on a smooth surface like a table or hardwood floor.  Snap your fingers and the top should spin.  It takes a bit of practice so try again if your spin isn't up to snuff.

Method 2:  This is a great technique - especially for small kids and anyone who does not have a lot of finger dexterity.  Stand the top up and roll the stem between your two palms.  By pushing your palms in opposite directions (quickly) you can get the top spinning.

Spinning the top upside down:

Method 3:  Use the same technique as described in method one - spinning the top by snapping your fingers.  But in this case, simply rotate your arm so the top is upside down a few inches above the table.  Snap your fingers.  If you snap hard enough the top should fall to the table and spin upside down.

Method 4:  You can also hold the top upside down in your palms and then push them in opposite directions (rolling the stem between palms) until the top spins and drops to the table.

Try spinning the top in your hand!  With a lot of practice,  it may be possible to spin a short-stemmed top upside down in your palm.  Stretch your fingers wide and practice somewhere the top won't be damaged if it drops.

Care of your tops:

Avoid playing with the tops on rough surfaces or around water.

Avoid storing the tops (long term) in an area exposed to direct sun.

Not suitable for toddlers without close, constant supervision.  Despite sturdy construction, stems of the tops could be broken and prevent a choking hazard.  Store out of reach of little hands.
